The Cloud Production Vape Game: 70/30 vs. 80/20 VG/PG

Are you a cloud-chaser?  If you are, then your main goal when it comes to vaping is exhaling the thickest, largest and fluffiest plumes of luscious vapor whenever you take a hit. Cloud-chasing is easily one of the most appealing aspects of vaping, and there are even cloud-chasing competitions due to how popular this activity has become.
If you want to improve your cloud-chasing game, it’s time to learn more about what’s known as the VG/PG ratio.  This refers to the balance between VG (vegetable glycerin) and PG (propylene glycol) in your e-liquid’s formula.  And, when it comes to ratios, there are two that are far more common than the rest: 70/30 and 80/20.  So, which one is better for blowing luxurious clouds?  Allow us to inform you.

What Are VG and PG?
First, let’s talk about VG and PG.  Every vape juice contains these two ingredients, but the balance between them varies.  VG is vegetable glycerin, which is a thick, sticky substance that’s found in many foods and cosmetics.  It’s odorless, and it helps thicken up e-liquid so that it doesn’t burn from the heat of the coil.  After all, if vape juice had the density of water, it would burn before it turned into vapor.
Meanwhile, PG, which stands for propylene glycol, is a much thinner ingredient.  It’s there to balance out the vegetable glycerin, because of an e-liquid is too thick, it will clog the coil.  Propylene glycol, like vegetable glycerin, is commonly found in foods and cosmetics.

What Does the VG/PG Ratio Have to Do with Cloud Size?
So, why does this matter?  Well, the balance between VG and PG has a lot to do with the size of your clouds.  Because VG is thicker than PG, more VG means thicker clouds.  Meanwhile, vape juices with a higher PG level produce thinner vapor, but they provide a more pronounced flavor because of how many flavor molecules can be carried by this thinner ingredient.

Which is Better: 70/30 or 80/20 VG/PG?
So, all that being said, you can imagine that an 80/20 ratio is more ideal for cloud-chasing than a 70/30 ratio.  Like we said, the more VG, the thicker the clouds, because a thicker e-liquid means thicker vapor.  Therefore, when you want to ensure that your e-liquid ratio is conducive to cloud-chasing, go with a higher VG level.
In fact, there are 90/10 ratios, 85/15 ratios and so on.  Again, the rule stays the same.  The more VG, the thicker and bigger the clouds.  It’s really that simple.

Other Factors That Can Determine Your Cloud-Chasing Abilities
So, here’s the thing – the ratio isn’t the only determining factor when it comes to your cloud-chasing abilities.  There are a few other things that you need to consider when upgrading your setup to be a cloud-producing machine.

Your Coil
Your coil has a lot to do with how big your clouds are, because your coil is what determines how much vape juice is turned into vapor per hit, and how much that e-liquid evaporates when a device is fired.  So, the way it works is that the lower the resistance level of the coil, the better your clouds will be.  This is because lower-resistance coils turn a lot more vape juice into vapor with each hit, and more vapor means bigger clouds.

Your Wattage
Another determining factor is your wattage level, and your wattage level has a direct relationship with your coil’s resistance level.  A low resistance level means that your wattage level must be set higher.  This is why cloud-chasers tend to use devices that can achieve at least 100 watts.

Your Nicotine Strength
Next, we have nicotine strength.  Basically, the more nicotine is in your vape juice, the smaller and thinner your clouds will be.  This is because like PG, nicotine thins out your e-liquid, and thinner e-liquid means thinner clouds.  So, if you care about cloud-chasing more than you care about nicotine, go for as low a nicotine strength as possible.

A Final Note
Keep in mind that when we talk about cloud-chasing and ratios, we’re strictly discussing sub-ohm vaping.  Salt nic e-liquids will not give you the big clouds that you want, regardless of the ratio, because of the fact that pod mods that are used with salt nic e-liquids are low-wattage devices by nature.  Low-wattage devices are incapable of producing large clouds of vapor.

Chase the Vaping Day Away!
If you want to blow huge vape clouds day in and day out, you need to start by choosing the right ratio.  As you can see, a ratio of 80/20 VG/PG is far better for chasing clouds than 70/30.  So, the next time you stock up on vape juice, look for an 80/20 ratio and you’ll be well on your way to fulfilling your cloud-chasing goals.
