Voopoo Argus E40 Review: The Powerful Pod System Redefining Vaping

Voopoo have sent the latest edition of the Argus range over for review – the Voopoo Argus E40!

The Argus E40 joins a long list of established stablemates such as the P1, P1s, P2, G, G2 and XT. Plus the Argus G2 Mini which we reviewed very recently.

For those that somehow may not have heard of Voopoo before, they were established by ICCPP in 2016 and are based out of China.

Since 2016, they have grown into a true industry titan, picking up multiple awards along the way. They are one of the world leaders when it comes to manufacturing vaping devices.

They have a large presence in the UK, USA and the EU. Presently selling their products into more than 70 different countries.

They have got a huge range of products to pick from, encompassing quite the spectrum! From beginner pod kits right through to powerful variable wattage mods – such as the Drag S2 and sub ohm tanks.

There’s something for pretty much every type of vaper to pick from!

What Can We Expect From The Voopoo Argus E40?
More power than your average pod system, that is for sure! This is capable of putting out up to 40 watts and comes with both a 0.3ohm and 0.6ohm pod.

Pods (or cartridges!) have been specially redesigned for the Argus E40 to really take advantage of what this device has to offer. These have either a 2ml (TPD compliant) or 4.5ml capacity depending on which region you purchase them in and are side-filled.

The pods have been designed to offer enhanced flavour and vapour production. They have an improved 4 layer leakproof design – which aims to offer a lifespan of around 100ml worth of refills without leakage!

It’s also compatible with the Argus PnP X range of replaceable coils using the PnP X cartridge.

A huge 1800mAh battery is built into the Argus E40 and the GENE.AI 2.0 chipset smartly detects the resistance of your coil.

2A USB Type C fast charging means that you won’t have to wait around long to recharge your Argus E40!

You can adjust the wattage from 5-40 watts using the power button.

There is a stepless airflow adjustment system allows you to smoothly adjust your airflow. You can easily switch between Restricted Direct Lung (RDL) and Mouth To Lung (MTL) vaping. We tell you what these terms mean in our Guide To Vape Styles.

A large and clear 0.42” OLED screen displays information and the LED lighting gives you an indicator of current battery life at a glance.

At launch, seven different colour schemes are available. You can choose from Pearl White, Space Grey, Spray Black, Starlight Purple, Sky Blue, Lake Green and Modern Red.

Design & Build Quality
Looks wise, Voopoo have described the Argus E40 as having a ‘futuristic mechanical design’, featuring a ‘half metal and half transparent’ appearance.

It’s manufactured from Zinc Alloy and Polycarbonate (PC), with dimensions of 114mm x 31.2mm x 22.6mm.

Now this is a little on the hefty side when it comes to pod systems. It is certainly one of the larger ones that I’ve used, but this comes as no surprise when you consider what Voopoo have packed in here!

This might be hefty, but it is very robust too, able to withstand the knocks of day to day usage. It is a kit that feels like it has been designed and built to last and definitely isn’t flimsy in the absolute slightest.

A standout feature on this kit is the 0.42” OLED screen on the side of the device. It’s one of the first features I noticed when I took the Argus E40 out of the box for the first time.

It clearly displays information such as the battery level, wattage output, coil resistance and number of puffs taken, as well as the menu settings when navigating the menu.

At the sides of the OLED screen are Checkerboard LEDs, which give you a visual indicator of how much battery charge you have left at a glance.

Opposite to the OLED screen is a clear cutaway, which displays the internal airflow system and gives you a glance at the circuit board too. Living up to the ‘futuristic mechanical design’ description.

Airflow is adjusted via the adjustment slider on the side of the device and boy is this ever smooth.

Not only is it smooth, but your airflow selection stays in place too. I’ve not had any issues with it becoming accidentally adjusted in my pocket.

Opposite to the airflow adjustment slider is the power button. This can be used to fire the Argus E40 and to adjust menu settings when needed. More on that further on in the review!

Argus E40 pods connect magnetically to the Argus E40 device, with a firm connection. The GENE.AI 2.0 chip automatically detects the resistance of the coil and suggests a wattage output.

You have to get hold of the pod and really give it a wiggle to get the pod to rattle and in day-to-day use this isn’t an issue.

A side filling system is used and you have the ability to see exactly how much e-liquid you have in the pod without needing to remove it.

Quick Start Guide

Filling the Argus E40 Pod
·Remove the pod from the mod.
·The filling port is located near the base of the pod and there’s a large silicone filling port cover that needs lifting up first.
·Once that has been lifted, a large and accommodating filling port is revealed, so just go ahead and stick your bottle nozzle in there and fill away.

If filling a fresh pod for the first time, let it stand for at least five minutes before vaping to allow e-liquid to correctly saturate the cotton in the coil, increasing longevity and reducing the risk of nasty dry hits.

You can use anything from 50/50 VG/PG e-liquid right up to 70/30 VG/PG here and either nicotine salt or traditional freebase nicotine e-liquids work just fine!

Operation
Once you have filled your pod up you are probably going to want to have a play with the settings available on the Argus E40 – it would be a shame not to!

Firstly, you are going to want to turn the device on. Five clicks of the power button will do that for you!

To enter the menu system, click the power button five times again. You’ll then have three different menu options available to you. Hold the power button down to choose an option.

·The first option is ‘puff clear’, which will reset the puff counter.
·Option number two is ‘lock’, which will stop the power button from firing the device. As this device has auto draw the first thing I did was disable this!
·Option three is ‘power off’…which just does what it says on the tin there. Turns the Voopoo Argus E40 off!

Adjusting the wattage is done by clicking the power button three times and you can adjust wattage output from 5-40W in 1W increments.

Safety protections built into the device are an eight second vaping cut off, short-circuit protection, overcharge protection, low battery protection and output over-current protection.

The battery charge remaining is displayed by the indicators at the side of the screen. Green = 60-100% charge remaining, Blue = 20-60% and Red = under 60%.

Charging
You’ve got 5V/2A fast charging with the Voopoo Argus E40 and a USB-C cable included in the box.

The USB-C charging port is located on the base of the device and the battery charges up from flat to full in around 45 minutes thanks to the excellent fast charging feature.

How Does The Voopoo Argus E40 Perform?
The Voopoo Argus E40 is compatible with Argus E40 pods, which come in 0.3ohm and 0.6ohm resistances. You get one of each of these included in the kit, which is a nice touch there from Voopoo.

Starting off with the 0.3ohm pod (as this is the one pre-installed with the kit)… This pod is aimed at restricted direct lung vapers and is recommended for use in the 32-40W region, so it is designed to really get the most out of the power this kit offers!

I get a dense, warm vape from this that really hits the spot for me. Flavour is plentiful and I could really pick out the individual notes in my e-liquids. Superb stuff!

I have been using this pod in the 35-40W region and expected a little heat around the mouthpiece, but I never really detected any.

If you are used to vaping 20mg nicotine salt based e-liquids in a pod system (like myself), you are probably going to want to knock this down to 10mg or even 5mg if you are using the 0.3ohm pod! 20mg gets a little spicy at 35 watts!

The 0.6ohm pod is designed to be run at 18-25W, so you are probably going to want to close the airflow down a little bit with this one. This offers a cooler vape than the 0.3ohm pod, but it still packs plenty of flavour.

Vapour production is something else, especially for a pod kit. With the airflow fully open, this is capable of producing some pretty dense and thick clouds. It is quite impressive for a pod kit that is for sure. You can also close the airflow right down and get a mouth to lung vape from this without issue.

Lifespan from these pods is excellent as expected. I’ve had experience with the Argus pods over time and these really do last – offering good value for money. It’s no different here too! At the time of writing both my 0.3ohm and 0.6ohm pods are still going, with no deterioration in flavour!

I will say that it takes around half a pod’s worth of e-liquid for the flavour to break in when you’ve filled a fresh pod up.

Now, both of these pods are pretty thirsty. Obviously the 0.3ohm is thirstier, especially as it is designed for use at higher wattage! I was sent the 4.5ml capacity version for review and I would refill the 0.3ohm one at least once a day with pretty heavy usage. The 2ml TPD versions will require more frequent refilling!

This kit boasts one of the largest built in batteries I’ve encountered on a pod system yet, with a whopping 1800mAh battery built into the device.

In practice, I can near enough get through a full days’ worth of vaping with the 0.3ohm pod at 37 watts and the 0.6ohm pod at 23 watts will last me two days easily!

Pros
·Powerful pod system
·Lots of airflow options
·Very smooth airflow control
·Large built in battery
·Has quick charging
·Robustly built
·Phenomenal performance
·Pods last a long time

Cons
·Menu system can be a bit finicky to use
·Quite a large sized pod system
·Pods are very thirsty, expect to get through a lot of e-liquid!

Final Verdict
From time to time, I’ll get sent a pod system that just stands out from the rest of the crowd and blows me away with its performance. That is exactly what has happened here with the Voopoo Argus E40.

This really is an exceptional vape pod kit, boasting outstanding performance and robust build quality.

I’ve been a fan of the Argus series of pods for a while now and the pods for the E40 suit this device perfectly.

Flavour and vapour production from these is exceptional, as is the longevity. I was very impressed with the lack of leaks or condensation present. Yes, they are a little on the thirsty side, but that is kind of to be expected when you take into account the power that the Argus E40 is capable of putting out.

Battery life is another big plus point here! With the ability to vape for a couple of days without needing a recharge – as long as you knock the power output down!

The Voopoo Argus E40 may well have inched its way ahead of the Vaporesso XROS Pro and the SXMini Puremax as my favourite pod kit to date! Great job Voopoo!
