Vape Duty-Free Allowance UK: How Much Vape Juice Can You Bring Back?

From 1 October 2026, travellers aged 17 or over can bring up to 50ml of vape liquid into England, Scotland or Wales duty-free. Exceed 50ml and duty is charged on the entire amount, not just the excess.

Back from holiday with a few bottles of vape juice in your bag? From 1 October 2026, there is a strict limit on how much you can bring into Great Britain without paying tax, and it is lower than most vapers expect.

The new vape duty-free allowance arrives on the same day as Vaping Products Duty, which adds £2.20 to every 10ml of vape liquid, with or without nicotine.

How Much Vape Juice Can You Bring Into the UK?
You can bring up to 50ml of vape liquid into England, Scotland or Wales duty-free, provided you are 17 or over, arriving from outside the UK, and the liquid is for your own use. HMRC confirmed the allowance in July 2026.

The allowance is measured in liquid, not devices. Nicotine strength makes no difference either: a 20mg nic salt and a 0mg shortfill count exactly the same, because the duty applies to all vaping liquid.

It also sits in its own category. The vaping allowance is separate from your alcohol, tobacco and general goods allowances, so an unused tobacco allowance cannot be swapped for extra vape juice.

Why Has the UK Introduced a Vape Allowance?
The allowance exists because vape liquid becomes an excise product on 1 October 2026. Liquid sold in UK shops now carries duty in its price, so HMRC needed a rule for liquid bought abroad and carried home. The 50ml limit lets holidaymakers bring back a sensible personal supply without paying, while stopping larger amounts entering the country duty-free.

The approach mirrors the long-standing allowances for alcohol and tobacco: a clear personal limit, and full duty on everything once you go over it.

What Counts Towards Your 50ml Allowance?
Every millilitre of vaping liquid in your luggage counts, whether it is in a bottle or sealed inside a pod or device. That includes:

Nic salts and freebase e-liquids, usually sold in 10ml bottles.
Shortfills, including nicotine-free 0mg liquid.
Nicotine shots, whether carried separately or already mixed in.
Prefilled pods, which UK rules cap at 2ml each.
Prefilled pod kits, including multi-pod 4-in-1 style devices.

So five 10ml bottles of nic salts fill your allowance on their own, as do 25 prefilled vape pods. You can mix and match freely, as long as the total stays at 50ml or less.

What Does Not Count Towards the 50ml?
Anything that holds no vaping liquid does not use your 50ml allowance. Empty refillable kits, spare coils, empty refillable pods and batteries fall under your general goods allowance instead. Heated tobacco sticks come under the tobacco allowance, and nicotine pouches are not vaping liquid.

A practical tip: travelling with a refillable kit and a few 10ml bottles keeps the maths simple, because only the liquid counts. Carrying several sealed prefilled kits makes it much harder to know your total at a glance.

Go Over 50ml and You Pay Duty on All of It
If you arrive with more than 50ml, you must declare it and pay duty on the full amount, not just the excess. It is the same all-or-nothing rule already used for alcohol and tobacco.

VAT and other charges may be added on top. Walking through the green channel while over the limit is a bad gamble: Border Force can seize all the vaping goods in that category, not only the extra millilitres.

The 50ml Allowance Is Not the 100ml Airport Rule
The 50ml allowance and the 100ml airport liquid rule are two separate limits, and you need to meet both. Many travellers confuse them.

A single 100ml shortfill can pass airport security in your hand luggage and still put you at double your customs allowance. For security, battery and packing rules, see our guide: can you take vapes on a plane?

How to Declare Vapes at UK Customs
To declare vapes, use HMRC’s online passenger service up to five days before you land, or go to the red channel or red-point phone on arrival.

1.Add up your total liquid before you pack for home.
2.Declare online up to five days before arrival, or at the red channel.
3..Pay duty on the full amount, plus any VAT due.
4.Keep your receipts and payment confirmation to hand.

If your total is 50ml or less and it is all for your own use, you can walk through the green channel.

Can You Share or Pool Your Allowance?
No. Each traveller aged 17 or over has their own 50ml, and it cannot be combined with anyone else’s. Two adults can each bring 50ml of their own, but one person carrying 100ml for both of them is over the limit. Travellers under 17 have no vaping allowance at all, and anything intended for sale must be declared, whatever the amount.

Arriving in Northern Ireland?
The 50ml allowance covers Great Britain only. Arriving in Northern Ireland from a non-EU country, vaping products count towards your £390 other-goods allowance. From an EU country, there is no UK duty if the products are for your own use and you carry them yourself, although bringing in more than 200ml may lead to extra checks. The 200ml figure is a guideline, not a hard limit.

How to Stay Under 50ml on Holiday
The easiest way to stay under the limit is to pack only what your trip needs and arrive home with 50ml or less. A few simple habits help:

Carry 10ml bottles, not big shortfills. One 100ml shortfill is double the allowance before you have used a drop.
Count your pods. Ten 2ml pods add up to 20ml, which is 40% of your allowance.
Buy before you fly. Stocking up in the UK means you know exactly what you are carrying and what is in it.
Use up or leave behind extra liquid before your return flight if you are close to 50ml.
Check local laws. Some countries restrict or ban vaping outright, so research your destination before you pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much vape juice can I bring back to the UK duty-free?
You can bring up to 50ml of vape liquid into England, Scotland or Wales duty-free from 1 October 2026, as long as you are 17 or over, arriving from outside the UK, and the liquid is for your own use.

Does 0mg nicotine-free vape juice count towards the 50ml?
Yes. Vaping Products Duty applies to all vaping liquid regardless of nicotine content, so 0mg shortfills count exactly like nic salts.

Do prefilled pods count towards the allowance?
Yes. The liquid sealed inside prefilled pods and prefilled kits counts. Each 2ml pod uses 4% of your 50ml, so 25 pods use the whole allowance.

What happens if I am only 1ml over the allowance?
You pay duty on the full amount. Arriving with 51ml means duty on all 51ml, which is £11.22 before VAT, and you must declare it.

Is the 50ml allowance the same as the 100ml airport rule?
No. The 100ml rule limits each container in your hand luggage at airport security. The 50ml allowance limits the total vape liquid you bring into Great Britain. You need to meet both.

Can my partner carry some of my vape juice for me?
Only if it is genuinely their own liquid for their own use and within their own 50ml. Allowances cannot be pooled or shared.

Do vape kits, coils and batteries count?
No. Hardware with no vaping liquid inside does not use the 50ml allowance. It falls under your general goods allowance instead.

What happens if I do not declare vapes over 50ml?
Border Force can seize all the vaping goods in that allowance category, not just the excess. Declare online before you land or use the red channel to avoid this.

50ml Per Person, Not a Drop More
Count every bottle, pod and prefilled kit before you fly home, and declare anything over 50ml. Stay at or under the limit and your vape juice comes home duty-free.
