Vape Coils: Types, Resistance and How to Choose the Right One

Your coil is the component that actually turns e-liquid into vapour. Every burnt hit, every flavour drop, every flooded tank traces back to it in some way.

Understanding what type of coil you have, what its resistance means, and whether it matches your device and vaping style is the difference between a setup that performs and one that constantly lets you down.

What Is a Vape Coil?
A vape coil, sometimes called an atomiser, is a small heating element housed inside your tank or pod. It consists of a resistive wire wrapped around a wicking material, usually cotton.

When you fire your device, the wire heats up, the cotton transfers liquid onto the coil, and vapour is produced. The term "atomiser" refers to the same component. If someone asks what is an atomiser on a vape, the answer is simply the coil assembly responsible for heating and vaporising your e-liquid.

Coils are consumable. They degrade with use and need replacing regularly. Knowing the five signs it is time to change your coil will save you from chasing problems that have a straightforward fix.

Vape Coil Types: Mesh vs Standard

Standard (Wire) Coils
Standard coils use a coiled wire, typically kanthal or nichrome, wrapped tightly around the wicking material. They heat up quickly but make contact with the liquid across a smaller surface area. This delivers a direct, punchy hit and is well-suited to MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping at lower wattages.

Mesh Coils
A mesh coil replaces the wire wrap with a flat, perforated metal sheet. The larger surface area means more of the wick is in contact with heat at once, producing more vapour, better flavour coverage, and a smoother inhale. Mesh coils have become the standard in most modern sub-ohm tanks and pod systems. They also tend to last slightly longer than traditional wire coils when used correctly.

For most vapers upgrading from a basic setup, the move to mesh is immediately noticeable in flavour quality.

How to Choose the Right Vape Coil
Choosing comes down to three things: your device, your vaping style, and your e-liquid.

Some vapers also move to higher VG ratios because of PG sensitivity — a mild irritation or dry throat that can persist even after changing coils. If you notice this, switching to a high VG e-liquid (70VG/30PG or above) or a 100% VG blend is usually the first thing to try. Bear in mind that high VG liquids are too thick to wick through high-resistance coils, so you will typically need a sub-ohm or DTL setup alongside them.
