Nicotine Free Vape Guide: Is It Safe, Best 0% Picks and How to Taper

QUICK ANSWER
A nicotine free vape is an e-cigarette or disposable filled with 0 mg e-liquid: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and flavoring, with no nicotine. It is not addictive the way nicotine is, but it is not harmless. The CDC says vape aerosol can contain metals and harmful chemicals, and testing has found nicotine in some products sold as 0%.

Key takeaways
Zero nicotine vapes use the same hardware and base liquid as nicotine vapes, minus the nicotine. You still inhale heated PG, VG and flavoring chemicals.
They avoid nicotine addiction, but the CDC, Cleveland Clinic and lab studies all say “nicotine-free” does not mean safe.
Labels are not always accurate. In a 2019 Australian study, 6 of 10 liquids sold as nicotine-free contained nicotine.
Big 0% disposables in October 2026 include the iJoy XP50K, Fumi x Cloud Nurdz 55K and Geek Bar Pulse X 0%. Stock changes often.
If you smoke, nicotine vapes help more people quit than 0% vapes, so taper to 0 mg only after cigarettes are behind you.

What is a nicotine free vape?
A nicotine-free vape is any vape that contains 0 mg/mL of nicotine. The device works exactly like a regular vape: a battery heats a coil, and the coil turns e-liquid into aerosol. Only the liquid changes. People also call these no nicotine vapes, non nicotine vapes, zero nicotine vapes or 0 nicotine vapes. They all mean the same thing.

You will find three main kinds:

0% disposables: prefilled, rechargeable devices sold in 0% versions of popular nicotine models, such as the Geek Bar Pulse X or iJoy XP50K.
0 mg e-liquid: bottled liquid for refillable pod kits and tank systems. This is the cheapest way to vape without nicotine.
“Wellness” vapes: diffusers sold with vitamin B12, caffeine, melatonin or herbs. Cleveland Clinic notes there is little evidence that inhaling these additives is safe or effective.

One label to watch: products sold with Nixodine or similar “nicotine alternatives” are not nicotine-free. Cleveland Clinic warns these compounds mimic nicotine and may be habit-forming.

Are nicotine free vapes safe?
No vape is risk-free, including nicotine-free ones. A Cleveland Clinic pulmonologist puts it simply: “There’s no such thing as a safe vape.” Removing nicotine removes the addictive drug, but not the other ingredients you inhale.

The hidden nicotine problem is real. The CDC says “some e-cigarettes marketed as containing zero percent nicotine have been found to contain nicotine.” In a 2019 Medical Journal of Australia study, researchers tested 10 nicotine-free e-liquids and found nicotine in six: three at levels similar to low-strength nicotine liquids and three at trace levels. All 10 contained 2-chlorophenol, a toxic chemical used in disinfectants.

Short-term, people report throat and airway irritation, dry mouth and gum irritation, and people with asthma or COPD may notice worse symptoms. Long-term effects are unknown. Compared with cigarettes, Medical News Today notes that smoking is very likely more harmful than vaping without nicotine, but that vaping still carries risks.  If you have a lung or heart condition, talk to a doctor before vaping at all.

Nicotine-free e-liquid for refillable vapes
If you already own a refillable pod kit or tank, 0 mg e-liquid is the cheapest way to vape without nicotine. Many bottled e-liquid lines include a 0 mg option next to their low nicotine strengths, so you can often keep the flavor you already use.

Match the coil: higher-VG liquids suit sub-ohm tanks; thinner, higher-PG liquids suit small pod kits.
Expect less throat hit: nicotine creates much of the “hit.” At 0 mg the draw feels lighter, so some people pick menthol or ice flavors to replace it.
Buy sealed bottles from known retailers: given the labeling problems above, choose brands that publish lab test results or a certificate of analysis.
Do not mix your own 0 mg with unknown liquids: you cannot tell how much nicotine is in an unlabeled bottle.

How to taper to 0 mg nicotine
The safest way to reach 0 mg is to step down in stages, not all at once. Smaller drops make withdrawal easier to handle. Here is an example plan; adjust the timing to how you feel.

.1.Track what you use nowNote how long a disposable or bottle lasts. Our nicotine strength converter turns % into mg/mL.

.2.Drop one step at a timeMove to the next strength only when cravings at the current level feel manageable.

.3.Expect a rough first weekSmokefree.gov says the worst withdrawal symptoms last a few days to a couple of weeks, and the first week is when slips are most likely.

.4.Use 0 mg to break the habitAt 0 mg you are only dealing with the hand-to-mouth habit. Cut back on when and how often you vape.

If you vape to stay off cigarettes, do not rush. A 2026 Cochrane review found that about 8 to 10 of every 100 people using nicotine vapes quit smoking, compared with 6 of 100 using non-nicotine vapes. Stay on nicotine until you are sure you will not go back to smoking.

Stepping down in stages makes the switch to 0 mg easier.

Non nicotine vape rules: age and regulation
Nicotine-free vapes sit in a gray area under federal law, but most stores treat them like nicotine vapes. According to FDA guidance, a nicotine-free e-liquid that is not made or derived from tobacco is not a “covered tobacco product,” so federal minimum-age and ID rules do not automatically apply. However, the FDA still regulates it as a “component or part” of a vape, and devices sold with it remain under FDA authority.

In practice, major vape retailers sell 0% products only to adults 21 and older, and state rules vary. Check your state’s law before buying. A 0% vape is also not an FDA-approved quit-smoking aid.

Frequently asked questions

Are nicotine free vapes safe?
No vape is completely safe. Nicotine-free vapes avoid nicotine addiction, but the CDC says vape aerosol can contain metals, fine particles and flavoring chemicals, and heated PG and VG can form formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.

Can you get addicted to a non nicotine vape?
Nicotine is the addictive drug in vapes, so a true 0% vape does not cause nicotine dependence. The habit of vaping can still be hard to break, and some products sold as 0% have contained nicotine.

Is vaping without nicotine better than smoking?
Smoking is very likely more harmful than vaping without nicotine, according to Medical News Today’s medically reviewed guide, but vaping still carries risks. If you smoke, nicotine vapes help more people quit than 0% vapes.

Do zero nicotine vapes give you a throat hit?
A lighter one. Nicotine causes much of the throat hit, so 0% vapes feel smoother. Menthol and ice flavors add a cooling sensation.

Will a nicotine free vape show up on a nicotine test?
A product with truly no nicotine should not add nicotine to your body. But testing has found nicotine in some products labeled 0%, so a mislabeled product could.

Do you have to be 21 to buy a nicotine free vape?
Major retailers sell 0% vapes only to adults 21 and older. Federal age rules may not cover tobacco-free 0 mg liquids, but state laws vary, so check yours.
