This is a painful vaping experience for every vaper - when you are trying to take a sweet and warm draw from your sub ohm vape or a disposable vape, but it ends up with a horrid and terrible brunt taste instead. Why is the burnt taste happening and how to avoid it? Here we are going to offer some tips and precautions to prevent the burnt hit from happening.
What are dry hit and burnt hit?
Before we know how to avoid burnt hit vaping, we should know what is burnt hit. Terminologies of burnt hit and dry hit are often interchangeably misused by many vapers, but actually burnt hit and dry hit are far different from each other. Dry hit is when the cotton (wicking material) in your vape is not saturated with e-liquid or it is not wicking properly. This can either be concluded to a wicking issue, a coil being ran at too high of a wattage or simply having an empty tank. As a result, you will get less flavour and less vapour from your device, without the nasty burnt taste and coughing that come with a burnt hit.
A burnt hit can only happen when there is no e-liquid on your wick for your coil to evaporate, because without vape juice to vaporize, the coil will start burning the wick, and the vaper essentially inhales the burnt cotton - this is probably the worst taste you may get from a vape.
It is worth noting that an occasional dry hit won’t do any lasting damage to your coil, but a burnt hit will make your coil unusable. Consequently, you can regard a dry hit as a warning signal of the up coming burnt hit. So let’s take a look on what may cause a dry hit or a burnt hit.
What may cause a burnt hit?
Running an excessive wattage
Every atomizer in the vape has its own recommended wattage range, and exceeding power vaping can spoil your coil head and vaporise the e-liquid quickly. When that happens, the coil can burn the wick, even when there is still some juice, leading to burning the wick that causes a burnt taste. So always remember keep the wattage within the recommended ranges.
Running with low e-liquid
Your coil could be spoiled if you squeeze every last drop of e-liquid out of the tank before refilling it. If the device runs low on e-liquid and without sufficient vape juice to be absorbed by the wick, it is possible to end up with a burnt hit. It is suggested to leave vape juice at not least than one-quarter full of the tank.
Vaping with high VG e-liquid
VG is one of the indispensable ingredients in the vape juice, along with PG flavouring, and nicotine(optional). However, not all e-liquids are suitable for one tank. Since VG is thicker and sweeter than PG, so a higher VG vape juice requires higher wattage to be vaporized, and when a coil has vaporized too much VG, there will be gunk left on the coil and create a burnt taste as a result.
This is the most common cause of burn hits. Taking too many hits in a row without pause in between, the wick doesn’t have enough time to soak up the vape juice. The vape coils could be quickly dry up and lead to burn hit. So if you sense that a burnt hit is coming, by noticing a slightly burnt taste, put your vape down for a moment. This will allow e-liquid to cover the dry spots of the wick.
Not priming your coil properly
Before using a new coil, you have to properly prime your coil by fully saturating the wick with vape juice. The wick is made of dry cotton, it is likely to end up with a burnt taste if you don’t prime it properly.
How to avoid burnt hit?
Properly prime your coil before taking a draw
Priming a new coil is a quite easy task but an essential step to get vaping started:
1.Soaked the wick by dripping a few drops of vape juice through the wicking holes.
2.Leave the coil to rest for about 10 minutes.
3.Screw the coil and assemble the tank
4.Fill in the tank with your favourite vape juice
5.Inhale a couple of times to make the liquid flow (without activated)
A refillable tank with a replaceable coil makes it even easier, simply filling the device with vape juice, leaving the vape to soak with the juice about 10 minutes and then inhale a couple of times to make the liquid flow.
Stop chain vaping
It is suggested to leave 15 to 20 seconds between every hit. If you want to soothe a nicotine craving by vaping, e-liquids with a higher strength of nicotine is a perfect choice.
Running within recommended wattage
Since different type of vapes are used differently, so make sure your vape device is working in a safe wattage range. Check out the wattage information on your device packaging, which is generally printed on the side of the coil. It is recommended to upgrade vape tank to one with a higher maximum wattage if you pursuit vaping at high intensity.
Why my disposable vape has burnt taste and how to fix it?
Disposable vapes in nine out of ten cases of burnout, the reason is simply that there is still power left in the device but the tank is out of e-liquid, and it’s time to dispose of it and get a new one instead.
